Overview
An abridged deck of cards for my Graphic Design 3 class. My Kaleidocards were inspired by a close art therapy friend and student who constantly created mandalas during our classes together. I wanted the deck in a monotone color palette with pops of gold to attract the eye.
Roles: Researcher, Designer, Illustrator
Software: Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop
This deck of cards was intended for a relaxing game night during a calm evening. I wanted to make the cards not only visually beautiful to look at but also something anyone of any age can enjoy. This assignment was truly the first time I created such intricate patterns, and I realized that making these patterns was something I truly enjoyed. While this assignment was only an abridged version, I intend to make the whole 52 deck because I believe these turned out really fun and unique.
Color Palette:
Timeline for this project:
Week 1: Dedicated to research and creating a moodboard
Weeks 2-3: Were dedicated to developing our brand, ie, the logo, typography, and illustration styles for the face cards
Week 4: Completed Face Card Illustrations & Mockups
All of my number cards are laid out on top, and the back of my cards, as well as two face cards and the joker card, are laid out on the bottom.
Challenges:
For this project, I was specifically troubled by my face cards, not only with coming up with ideas that were in theme with my concept, but making them feel connected as a unit and being able to have detail that's accessible from a distance was quite a challenge as well. The same can be said about my mandala concept overall, as they are always very detailed and unique, but I had to make sure the mandala would still read as one to viewers.
